ubuntu dell optiplex 620 drivers for dvd player

this is my first ubuntu and things are going well except for giant problem with dvd player where it will show the actual dvd and when you click play nothing happens...same thing when I tried to attach an external cd player? any advise?

You don't need a driver for DVD drives in Ubuntu just like you don't need them in Windows.

What is the output of :

sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive; lsb_release -a; uname -a

Where do I key this string in or how do I get a software update for this...I think I stopped one in progress so maybe that is my problem

Copy the command as one big command and press CTRL+ALT+T

You can then paste the file and hit ENTER. Type your password (You will get no feedback, but keep typing).

Install the DVD decoder as well as vlc then try playing a video dvd. The drive is seen.

ty very much being new to the linux things...how do i install the dvd decoder and the vlc? I need specifics since it is so new

You can use software centre to install vlc.
