Manual Partitions

I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside Windows XP (desktop) or Windows 7 (laptop). I want to provide the partitions manually. What are the partitions to be provided and what are the lower and upper limits on the partition sizes? What are the file systems to be provided? Please guide me for installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS manually.

I suggest you make 3. Make the space you have into an extended partition and you will have more flexibility (Drives can only have 4 primary partitions). I suggest:

10Gb Ext4 for /
Same amount as RAM for swap
The rest for /home formatted Ext4

Having a separate home partition makes backup easier as well as if you need to reinstall you can simply mark the partition to be used as /home but NOT be formatted (handy). It also keeps data that changes a LOT away from data that rarely changes. If you apply this layout in Windows too (having pagefile and %TEMP% on it's own partition) then you will see significantly less fragmentation.
