What version can i install

Yes im on a laptop running Windows 2000 and 256mb ram and a Intel Pentium III 700MHz cpu with a 20GB hard drive and i am wondering by my specs what version would be best for my system...im sick of microsoft's bull crud

Lubuntu or Xubuntu.

If you are installing get the Alternate disk, instead of the Desktop disk, as it used less memory.

Looking at your system specs , Lubuntu can be suggested .
Still before installing get yourself a live cd and test if all works well with your hardware .

Lubuntu, slitaz, tinycore, puppy

Xubuntu is losing its lightness these days. Lubuntu is staying true. If you want a really light OS, install ubuntu minimal then install fluxbox and slim. Comes in at about 1.2Gb and will be slick as fluxbox doesnt need a desktop environment, it is a graphical all of its own.

well i have the 10.4 installer for windows and i was wondering if i put Lubuntu or Xubuntu if it would run smoother or is that just a pipe dream?

I suggest you use Lubuntu 12.04. It is also LTS and is the latest release of Ubuntu

i tried that and it lagged from hell...thats why i try to get older software cause i cannot afford to get more ram!

Lubuntu is made for systems with about 256Mb RAM so should be ok
