12.04 64 bit on wubi: no shutdown icon, ctl-alt-del inop.

If it installed properly, the shutdown in on a menu from mthe on/off cog icon on the top panel RHS.
Your first tomment about not being able to boot makes me think you have a didgy usb installation.
CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work the way it used to. Press and hold the Super key to see shortcuts. (That's the legacy Windows key).
HUD is entered using the ALT key. Mystery? Probably. Tap the Super key to raise the Dash. The edit bar there is powerful. Try clicking on the Apps icon at the bottom of the lens. (looks like a ruler and two candles). The click on 'filter results'. That is what you now get in place of the system menu. Try for a week, and you wil NEVER want to go back!

1. Although the USB-resident installation might have been "didgy," I loaded what's currently resident separately from the wubi source. There was no way to get an installation from the USB, although all functions were there running live from the USB, including the shutdown icon. From the on-line wubi install, there is no on/off icon on the top right. The only item appearing is a "switch user" icon. If I invoke it, I get to an appropriate login page on which the icon appears, but it does not shut the system down. It only gets me back to the previous page with the switch user icon.
2. According to the on-line literature, ctl-alt-del is supposed to invoke a state from which one can shut down. When invoked, absolutely nothing happens, no matter how long one holds the keys.
3. I found something called system menu in the synaptic collection. It does nothing but bring up an arcane collection that has no function I can find.
4. I understand how to invoke HUD from the "super" key, and it works. It would be nice if one of the things that could be done is to shut down.
5. I love the functions of 12.04 (those that work) and would like it to be fully functional. I have 10.04 on an older Dell laptop and it has been essentially bulletproof...but didn't reach that state until about a year's worth of updates had passed.

I'll try a re-install and see if there was something didgy about the one I have.

Until then, there's no way I'd switch the Dell from 10.04...yet.

This computer, BTW, is running Mint 9. It's an old Dell desktop, and it works.

CTRL+ALT+F1 is supposed to give a full screen terminal and CTRL+ALT+t should give you a gui terminal so you can shut down from there. If it is an old Dell desktop you have, then I'd try the iso on a DVD rather than a USB. This is usually fairly bullet proof.

I really don't like the sound of what you have currently - it definitely is faulty. I don't blame you for being very cautions, but I have been running 12.04 since Alph1 - initially dual-booting with 11.10 - and I certainly wouldn't go back.

The computer with problems running 12.04 is an HP dv6 with 64-bit AMD
processor, 6 GB of RAM. I've tried an earlier beta version of 12.04 on
the Dell D800 running live off both a CD and USB and they both perform
OK...that way. This Dell desktop is not going to be changed any time soon.

I'll get to a new attempt at a clean install of 12.04 64-bit on the HP
tomorrow.

If you install xfce4 package, you can use the old school menus by logging in to the xfce session.

A re-install took care of the problems. Barry...you were right. It was didgy.
