Disk partition and File system change

Asked by Malay Chatterjee

I had Ubuntu alongside XP in my laptop. While booting, Ubuntu was giving me option to choose the operating system. I wanted to try Windows 8 consumer preview, which on installation removed the booting option and no choice of Ubuntu, XP or Windows 8 came up. The laptop became unusable and I could not even boot from CD ROM as I lost my original Windows CD a few years back. So, to save my computer, I started it with Ubuntu CD which erased everything from my computer, made the entire 160 GB into one disk partition and changed the file system to .XT4 from NTFS.

I tried Gparted to create a partition, where I can change the file system into NTFS again, so that I can put Windows there but I could neither unmount the partition nor I can resize it.

My questions are -

How to - 1.Partition the hard disk,
                 2. Change the file system into new partition or
                3. Remove Ubuntu

Malay Chatterjee

Removing Ubuntu is the same as removingany OS, just install over the top of it or delete the partition(s) it uses and use the space for other things.

If you reinstall Your chosen OS you can remove the ubuntu partitions and reinstall that OS, if you intend to dual boot, delete all partitions then install Windows to a portion of the available space, leave unpartitioned space and you can install Ubuntu to the unpartitioned space :)

The answer is completely inadequate.

I tried and came to know that I can not install Windows unless I get some space or a partition with NTFS file system. But the entire hard disk is made into one partition with xt4 file system by Ubuntu. So, unless I can resize the partition the question of installing Windows can not occur.

If I somehow get some space and install Windows 7, that may remove Ubuntu but the GRUB will still be there and it will prevent the booting of the new OS.

So, I am still awaiting some help from someone.

Windows 7 can delete Linux partitions, or you can resize the Ext4 (or delete it in Ubuntu liveCD).

Andrew,

Thank you for your kind answer. Now, I will have to learn to make the Ubuntu Live CD, which I tried previously without success. But O.K, i will try again.
