Ubuntu Installation, /dev/sdb won't show in boot loader choice

Asked by Carl Sirotic

Hi,
I am installing Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04 (any many other linux distrib I tried, all base off ubuntu), and when I come on the partition selection, I put ubuntu on a ext4 partition at the start of the drive.

The problem is, the drive I install it on, is /dev/sdb, wich is a usb 320 gb seagate drive and I want to install the boot loader on this drive. So when the drive is not connected, it boots directly on windows. When I want to boot from it, I have to select boot from usb on the bios startup.

Well, the exact problem is, when to choose where to install the bootloader, only /dev/sda will show up. Even tough I can partition the hard drive /dev/sdb. It's quite a problem since I dont want to touch /dev/sda boot loader.

Thanks for any help.

Well thank you for your input.
It looks like ubuntu didn't like the fact of my drive have a logical partition between 2 primary ones.
After wiping the drive completely, there were no problem installing the boot loader on the external drive at all.

Thank you.
