Is it possible to mirror the Operating System or the drive on which Ubuntu is installed onto another hard drive ?

Asked by Vaughan

To Whom It May Concern,

I am using Ubuntu Release 10.04 (Lucid) Kernel Linux 2.6.32-38-server

Is it possible to mirror the Operating System or the drive on which Ubuntu is installed onto another hard drive, so if the one drive fails the PC will boot from the second mirrored hard drive?

In the Disk Utility I saw the possibility of creating a Raid Array (File --> Create --> Raid Array), but this requires an empty filesystem to begin with. The Disk Utility is installed with the Gnome Desktop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sure, you can use clonezilla or even dd in a liveCD. If you use Ext3 for your system, you can use partimage in liveCD to make a compressed image of the file system which you can then archive and restore when needed (partimage is not conversant with Ext4 yet)
