How to install several different ubuntu iso images onto a single usb drive?

Asked by Hadmut Danisch

Hi,

ubuntu comes with a collection of iso images for a diskless desktop, an alternate installer, a server installer, different architectures. However, many computers don't have CD drives anymore and CDROMs are bulky. Therefore it is common practice to copy the iso image onto a USB device (USB stick/pendrive), either with usb-creator-gtk or - with newer versions of the iso images - directly with dd.

Both methods have the disadvantage that you can copy/use only one iso image at a time.

My question:

I want to create a small USB drive with about 8GB, that contains all ubuntu iso images for emergencies on journeys, in the office etc. It should have a boot menu to choose with image to boot.

How would I achieve that? Can syslinux chainboot into iso-images? And if so, how do I provide the persistant state file (like with usb-creator-gtk)?

best regards
Hadmut

You can get 2, 4, 8 and 16 gig MicroSD cards fairly cheaply. Get a few of those and a $2 card and you can have all of your favourite distros wherever you go.

Can you help with this problem?
