Hi Yaacov, Ubuntu recommends downloading the 32-bit version because most computers can handle it. Meaning, it is the most compatible version thereby being the default. Take note, the 32-bit version works well with 64-bit machines too.

In the near future, we will all be using 64-bit computers (or probably faster). ;-)

For more information about 32-bit and 64-bit, check out the Ubuntu Community Documentation for this topic at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/32bit_and_64bit

some 3rd parties only support 32bit as well. Just makes life a bit easier. Users can install the PAE kernel and access 64gb RAM in 32bit but each process will only be able to access 4Gb. If you have a 64bit CPU, most times it it good to go 64bit.

You can boot on Ubuntu CD, choose "Try without install" and check how hardware is managed (mostly WIFI).
Personally, I switched to 64 bits since a long time, without any issue.
It seems that 64bits kernel is more reliable than PAE one.

Thanks,
i moved to 64bit buy choosing "Upgrade ubuntu 11.10 to 11.10".
the upgrading process was well except a message closing the end that told
me that some applications will remove because of unsporting.

at the end, the computer reboot and didn't want to start to work.
finally i installed it again from scratch in 64bit.

Yaacov.
