Boot Device Not Found Error

Asked by Vaughan

To Whom It May Concern,

I am receiving the error "Boot Device Not Found -- Insert Boot Device and press any key" when trying to boot into Ubuntu 10.04 Server (Lucid).

Before I rebooted the PC and ended up with the above error, I disabled apparmor in order to determine whether or not it was causing problems by preventing a third party daemon from starting at startup by using the commands. I was logged in as root.

"/etc/init.d/apparmor stop"
"update-rc.d -f apparmor remove"

I also added created a partition and mounted a second sata hard drive. At first I thought Ubuntu was trying to boot from the newly added sata hard drive.

I then rebooted the server to see if apparmor had been preventing the daemon from starting up and received the above error.

I also changed the boot order in the bios and physically unplugged the second hard drive, but I still received the above error.

Is there anyway I can repair the boot process without having to reinstall the O/S and all the software again?

Thank you

You can boot to live CD and reinstate the boot loader using a chroot
