extremely long boot time from USB stick

Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire One with a HDD disk that does not work, so I have been trying to boot it from a flash drive

I tried booting Ubuntu 10.10 but it took about 20-30 MINUTES

so I thought maybe the OS was too much for 1 GB RAM, and tried Puppy---still 20-30 minutes to boot, but then runs fine---

What the Heck is going on?

Is the RAM healthy?

1Gb RAM is plenty. The recommended is 512Mb so it will run fine.

Yes, I belive so. when it finishes boot it runs good and fast--it's just the boot time thats extremely slow

No sufficient, use the Memtest on the ubuntu install CD. Also ensure you have the latest BIOS. This is a big deal on little netboooks

Well, the issue is that as this is a netbook, there is no CD drive, and I don't have an external one.....

Can I install a newer BIOS from a USB stick? this could be the problem...

depends on what brand usb stick you have. sandisk usb sticks i find are extremely slow, so are the ones from kingston.

Aha! this may be the issue--I have a Sandisk 8 gig- I haven't got around to trying anything yet, but this may be a good idea

I changed over from a Sandisk to a PNY-boot time decreased from twenty minutes to about 3

I also used a different version of Universal USB installer
