upgrade from 8.04 to 11.04

i have installed ubuntu 8.04 just now and having no update installed, because i need actully new version (11.04 or 11.10). can i upgrade it to 11.04 without any upgrade related to old system. i really need not to install any 8.04 updates. this installation is just for as i have this live cd and i have not download new version.
if any further information required related to my quastion please tell me.

I suggest to you to wait for October 13th when Ubuntu 11.10 will released and install it without upgrading.

Since 11.04, you can choose to "upgrade OS" which means OS files are replaced but not user file. As I'm a little paranoiac, I recommend to do a backup of valuable data before.
