Asked by jeffrey cook

cannot install Ubuntu from cd or usb, I get blank screen with just a symbol at the bottom (access symbol) and it just locks up. Tried CD and DVDs and different usb drives but no luck. Trying to dual boot on a Toshiba satellite laptop with Windows 7.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?

Can you tell something more about your hardware?
Did you try changing any parameters at boot?

Did not MD5 test the ISO. Did not burn the CD as slow as possible. But when I tried to install via usb drive I get the same result. But on a different laptop both work just fine. So now I'm thinking there is a hardware issue with this version. I've had Ubuntu on this lap top before in a dual boot with Windows 7 but not 11.04. Did something change with this latest distro? I've dual booted this combination on my shop tower with no problems. Here are my hardware specs. And thank you for any and all help that you can give.

I suggest you MD5 test the ISO so you KNOW it is good. Without testing it we do not know if it is complete or consistent.

What do you call "access symbol" ?

Well the problem was solved. It must of been a conflict with my hardware and Ubuntu 11.04. I checked the MDS and it turned out fine. I downloaded the ISO again and burned it again real slow, on CD, DVD, and to a USB and I got the same result. I would get the first screen with shows a keyboard and another symbol (access symbol) and then a blank screen. Nothing was working. I also tried Linux Mint with the same result.

I then dug out a copy of Ubuntu 10.04 and it took off as it should of. I installed it just fine (triple boot with Fedora and Windows 7). I just had to upgrade until I got to 11.04 and now it works fine.

I did check the disk for errors and updated my BIOS but there just must be something with 11.04 that my system doesn't like and prevented it from installing.

So long story short: Older Ubuntu worked better than the newer and Ubuntu 11.04 hates my laptop.

Thank you all for your help and your ideas.
