Actually I already have Ubuntu up and running installed as my OS (got rid of Windows XP and don't miss it).
This is in reference to downloading another package of programs to run off the thumbdrive as needed rather than install on my system. I don't see any instructions in Ubuntu on how to do this (ie. install an ISO image to a thumbdrive other than Ubuntu).

I want to run Vidalia, Tor basic bundle for linux - it does not install properly
on my system so I want to try running it from a USB drive. It is an
application package not a boot up drive or OS. Just want to get Tor
running. This is an application program with Vidalia as a GUI.

you have to put a complete operation-system on the usb-drive to boot it not just an application

here you will find infos about creating a bootable usb-drive with an operation system

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

also have a look here
