Booting and stuff

Asked by Name Withheld

Am I just crazy? I have tried a lot of things to try and make a bootable everything but it seems that I am doing something wrong.........

Whenever someone on this website asks a question about booting they get "make sure you didn't write the disk too fast" "make sure that you have your bios set correctly" "make sure your files aren't corrupt"

I have done all these things but it doesn't seem like Ubuntu works...Like an odd experience I have been having was I tried installing Kubuntu on an external hard drive. In the part when you start up your computer and it asks you what OS you want to use Kubuntu was there, but when I clicked on it I got something that said that only minimal bash like commands were available. I tried boot, and I think it said that there was no bootable volume or it might have been saying to specify what I wanted to boot (you will have to tell me the exact command to put in if you wanna help with that) I had a disk in at the time I typed in exit and then it booted the Kubuntu CD................. Funny thing is is that It didn't show my external hard drive as one of the install options, it showed my internet phone though...... And also it let me make a USB but.... that won't boot ether.

I saw an artical recently wondering if by chance you can't boot off of a CD-R and it said that you need a CD that says its bootable.

Why is it that everyone seems to be able to boot off of a CD or something but me?

I am trying to boot off of a 52x 700MB CD-R I got from walmart...... if I need something else then you should tell me a local store that would sell something better.

How are you burning the disk? Do you open the image with the burner or are you burning it as a data disk (Burning it as a data disk will result in a CD with one file which won't work, a correctly burned CD will have the files on the CD as a normal application CD).

You want to write the .iso image to the CD, so that (a) you're not just copying the files inside the .iso to the CD, as then it wouldn't be bootable (please make sure you understand this distinction--if not, please post again to ask about it), and (b) after you have burned it, you will see multiple files on the CD.

Have you followed the interactive instructions in Step 2 at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download?

Did you set the CD to be the first boot device?

@first post: I am doing that I didn't know that there was a second part the "ISO Recorder Power Toy" part that might have been the problem
@Second post: I know how in the BIOS menu, but I haven't checked on this computer. Can you still get into the BIOS menu if you can't see the F-buttons you can press? F2 right?

The key you press to enter the BIOS Setup or the boot menu differs from machine to machine. F2 is common. You can also try Escape, F1, F10, F12, and Delete.

So, is that to say that you've figured out how to burn it? Or are you asking for help?

I am not asking for help in fact that helped very much and I feel like frolicking in meadows!

One problem though.... I did get into the BIOS Settings after I put in a blank password, the BIOS Option setting is to make it view only! how do I change this?

cause it won't boot on this computer, I think it was made that way on purpose... Since it was a school computer in a networking environment

if it is a school computer, the school most likely installed software to prevent anything from being installed, in particular, viriii.

first what do you mean viriii?

It might not have been the school anyway. If it helps, I am running and MPC one of their final lines too.

"I am not asking for help in fact that helped very much and I feel like frolicking in meadows!"

Is that to say that you were able to boot from the Ubuntu install CD and install Ubuntu?

"One problem though.... I did get into the BIOS Settings after I put in a blank password, the BIOS Option setting is to make it view only! how do I change this?"

If you put in some other password (any other password, a one-character password or whatnot), does the same thing happen? (This question is to determine if the zero-character password is actually the BIOS password.)

Oh I meant that it worked on other computers now but not the one that I am having BIOS problems.

And I entered a few different passwords that are usually passwords the school uses and that would be a default passwords. I entered nothing and got in, in the security options there was a option to make it password protected and another option to put in a password (which said not entered)
