netbook or desktop for networking

Asked by petermat

I just wish to use Ubuntu to make a couple of USB drives visible to an XP network, and clone various folders between the USB drives on a schedule that depends on the day of the week. Nothing else. Do I need the desktop version for this or is the netbook version fine? Ubuntu will go on an Acer 5000 laptop.

Both are fine for the requirement. The ONLY difference is the user interface, the underlying OS is IDENTICAL. If you like the netbook UI, use the netbook OS, otherwise use the desktop. There is no advantage or disadvantage for what you need between the two.

OK, brilliant - thanks.

So I downloaded the netbook version and created a thumb drive per the instructions - only to discover that my laptop has no provision for booting from USB - hard drive, floppy and network are the only options in the BIOS. If I just make an ISO CD from the download, should that work, or do I need some equivalent to the thumb drive installer?

You can make an ISO CD, but don't burn Ubuntu ISO image as a classical file, but as an ISO image else it will not boot. You have in your burning software an option for this.
