I just want to uninstall Ubuntu

intall another program over ubuntu

1. Back up anything you want to keep.

I can't access my original programing and none of my previous documents are anywhere. It is as if I have a brand new computer again. Nor is it coming up with the option of opening windows or ubuntu when the computer starts up as my computer loving friend who recommended this program to me said it would. I'm looking into reinstalling another program. My biggest concern is losing everything I had on my computer.

the stuff probably are still there. you just don't know how to look for them.

what do you see when you start the computer?

It does the Compaq label then jumps straight into Ubunku. When I downloaded it I picked the one with the partitions so I could go back and forth and set the partition at half. It shows the options in disk utility that it takes up 500g when it's on and has two sections of 6g, one is unknown which I'm assuming was Vista and trying to make it available did nothing. I had read by changing the partitions I could go into Vista but that's not working.

press CTL+ALT+T to get open up a terminal window. then type

sudo fdisk -l

that's a hyphen followed by a lowercase L

enter your password when asked. it will not show on the screen.

If you installed Ubuntu 10.10 (the most recent version) then there is a bug/usability issue with the installer that has led a number of people to inadvertently wipe their hard drives when installing.

This is unfortunate and if this has happened to you, then I'd suggest you lookup a tool called photorec ( http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step ) that can recover data from formatted drives (only the data that has not been wiped when you installed - you should also stop using the drive because you could be overwriting some of this data.)

If you do the command suggested by marcus aurelius it should tell you whether there are any ntfs partitions (it will say HPFS/NTFS in the right column). If not, then windows and the data has likely been wiped (if it just says "Linux" and "Linux swap/Solaris")

bcbc, it's not nice terrifying people like that. we should look first to see if the data is still there. she might just have a problem with the dual boot.

Please provide partition table, so will be able to analyze problem and propose solution.

After shutting off my computer and turning it back on my screen is black. There is nothing on the screen. No cursor, no programs...nothing. I'm going to have a tech take a look at it. Thank you for trying to help.
