Installer too large for CD

Asked by Patrick Case

I am trying to install Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat onto a Powerbook G4, the one from the page with the alternate downloads. My problem is that the file is 710 MB and as such when I try to burn it in disk utility, it tells me that the file is too large for the CD.

You may want to use USB or use the alternate which is 685Mb

The file is too big for a standard CD which is strange.

Yeah, I've been trying to make a bootable USB stick, thought I had it when it showed up in the boot screen by holding down alt after following the instructions provided for how to do it with Terminal commands but when I told it to procede with the boot, it just refreshed the boot screen. This machine is a bit old and only has wimpy little USB 1.1 ports which I believe may be at the root of why it won't let me boot from the stick, seems my last two choices are to track down a friend with a DVD burner or try to set up my external hd that runs on Firewire as my bootable drive. If anyone else has any suggestions, by all means, I've been tearing my hair out for almost 2 days now trying to figure this out.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you transferred to the USB?

I tried doing it using Terminal commands in Mac, I wound up just using the other alternate download 'cause it does fit on a cd. After 17 years with Mac OS, I've converted completely Ubuntu. Total win.
