ubuntu 10.10 netbook usb install on eeepc 901

Asked by Jonathan Hartland

I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 lts desktop on my eeepc 901 and it runs fine so a friend wants to install the netbook version on her eeepc701. I can only find the 10.10 netbook install image, which transfers to the 2GB usb drive I bought just fine. When I reboot, I get an error saying unrecognised (or invalid, or similar) command in startup script, followed by boot:
What is this all about, and where can I find a 10.04 netbook disk. I found one here --> http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ but can't find one on the www.ubuntu.com site. Is this the right place to download from, and will it fix the problem?

Your download source is correct but you should verify the download with the MD5SUM provided in that site. From Terminal:

  cd ~/Downloads
  md5sum ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso

The output should match this:
712277c7868ab374c4d3c73cff1d95cb

The Eeee PC BIOS boot sequence is a little strange. Did you see the LED of USB key on ?
Have a look at:

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my ASUS EeePC 901 w/ 2g of RAM & 2 SSD's: a 4g & a 16g. Done all the backing up so no worries there. I've also done a bit of trying of different suggestions from other forums & tutorials but I ck'd the version from the terminal & it's STILL 10.10.

Ok, here is MY twist: I'm trying to boot from a 10.04 LiveCD created with Unetbootin on a SD card (2g). I ck'd the ck5sum & the iso is fine, it's not that, nor is it the BIOS issue since I can go in & choose a "USB Flash drive" option in the Boot Sequence.

I reboot from the flash drive just fine BUT get OS Missing on a black screen & then I reboot to my 10.10 version of Ubuntu. This no matter what I try.

I reformatted & recreated the installation & it's a no-go.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. I have physical issues & I'm tired of the GUI not being quite right for my limitations.

I just now realized why my question is in the wrong place here. DUH!

This person has created a USB installer in a 10.04 desktop environment NOT a 10.10 one, which is undoable (see this link https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes#Common%20Desktop%20Applications).
