I have a bare hard disk and my computer BIOS does not support booting from anything USB. This is a very old ( 9 years ) computer, that I am trying to restore for Linux.

have you tried pressing ESC or F1 after powering it on to get into BIOS to boot from the cd?

What part of many "experts" have tried to get this computer to boot from a CD did you not understand?

Yes, that and dozens of other things have been tried.

Is there a way to create some boot floppies, like we used in the early days of Windoze and OS/2?

First off, I am too damn old to be called a dude.

Second, it seemed like a reasonable question, given your answer.

Third, it may help the discussion to know that all the drives, including the CD-ROM in this computer are all SCSI. I think that is why it can't boot from the CD. The BIOS can't figure it out.

If your computer is so old, you may be better off with something like Puppy linux, which has a boot floppy option.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/PuppyLinux

Its quite possible that your hardware would simply churn under newer window managers.

It is technically possible to load ubuntu from a floppy, you have to do something called a net-inst, or a TFTP install -- but this is quite tricky, and not acecssible to the average user.

Alternately, and probably easier: Place the HDD in a comptuer that does to USB boot, install in that computer, then move the drive to the old computer

OK, I finally solved the problem by installing an IDE CD-ROM drive.
