This will be impossible (except for a complete rewrite) unless there
is good Python support for Android.

Jaap, thanks so much for Zim! It meets a huge need and is very good at what it does.

What if, instead of attempting to port Zim completely to Android, someone wrote a text editor for Android that enables WYSIWYG editing of Zim-formatted text files? Here's my setup and this would be the last "missing piece" to make it work perfectly:

I use Dropbox (though it should work with UbuntuOne or other cloud sync services) on two Ubuntu laptops and my Android phone. I have my Zim "Notes" notebook shared through Dropbox and, on the two Ubuntu laptops, things work as expected. I do find that I need to restart Zim when switching to the other laptop so as to see all the changes that have been made, but this is not a problem.

When I'm on the road and using my Android phone, I use the Dropbox file browser, browse to a text file in the "Notes" notebook and open it in a text editor. When I save the file, the changes are uploaded automatically via Dropbox and are waiting on my laptop(s) when I return.

This works well, so far, but it would be really nice to have a graphical user interface and WYSIWYG editing for the editor on the phone. I don't think this would be hard to implement, as the Zim markup is documented and simple. Any ideas where to look for Android hackers that might want to put together a basic text editor with the features listed above? It seems simple enough that AppInventor might be a place to start: http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/about/

Hi TIm,

Not many people read this question section. What you might want to do
is put a feature request for a simple android frontend in the bug
tracker and or the mailing list. I don't have any android devices, so
will not pick it up myself, but maybe there are more people who want
this out there.

Regards,

Jaap
