Installing latest Zeitgeist broke Unity

Asked by JamesH

I've been using a Ubuntu launchpad bug to track my problem (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+question/156829), but thought it would be worth adding it here.

I installed the latest Zeitgeist (0.8) on to my up to date Ubuntu box, and Unity broke. What happens is the the new application finder (what is the name of that thing?), where you type in the name of the app you want and it lists them all, no longer lists any files. In addition, the big icons (e.g. Media) do nothing.

A fellow sufferer has had success with installing unity-place-applications and unity-place-files to get functionality back. I have not had the chance to try them yet.

I *think* these were uninstalled on my system when I used the Zeitgeist PPA.

So there appears to be a packaging issue under certain circumstances that breaks Unity.

Thanks

James

Just to confirm that (re) installing the unity-place-applications and unity-place-files packages has fixed the problem. I suspect a packaging issue somewhere.

+1 on this issue.

Reinstalling the unity-place-applications and unity-place-files packages and rebooting solves the problem.

It tells me that don't install any important ubuntu component using 3-rd party sources or you will get messed up.

Thanks JamesH for solution. I didn't know what packages the "unity search" uses, and even don't know what the "unity search" real name is.
