Open a terminal by going to Accessories>Terminal, once that opens execute:-
sudo dpkg --configure -a
you will be asked for your password, also you will not see the password as you type it into the terminal. Post any error messages you receive, if you don't then try running Synaptic again.

Once you reach the Ubuntu login screen, press Options and Sessions and press Gnome Fail-safe terminal, once you reach the terminal execute the command again and once that is finished restart the X-Server by pressing Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace and see if Synaptic works properly.

No, not that output, the one when you actually execute the command(dpkg --configure -a) in the terminal.

Try this then, switch to a tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, login and execute the command:-
sudo dpkg --configure -a
and after that finishes go back into the normal tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 and see if Synaptic now works properly.

Can you help with this problem?
