Installed Ubuntu on a flash drive and got the "missing wubildr.mbr file" message.

Asked by Darren Rodriguez

Hi,

I just found out about this OS yesterday and decided to try it out. I downloaded it on a 8gb flash drive and used the universal USB installer found in pendrivelinux.com. When I restart my laptop it always shows the "wubildr.mbr is missing or corrupted" message and when trying to use LiLi (dunno if I should have used it instead of Universal USB Installer), it never gets a green light when selecting the flash drive.

How can I fix this so I can boot Ubuntu? Do I need to buy a 16gb memory stick or something? My laptop runs on Windows 7 64-bit.

Why are you using Wubi, when you have an 8Gb flash drive?? It makes no sense. Install unetbootin and format the USB stick. You can then use the remainder of the 8Gb device as persistence. You can then run the OS purely off the USB stick (assuming your PC can boot USB)

I don't understand what the size of the USB drive matters. You need about 2GB to create a Ubuntu USB for installing or live environment. You don't need (and should not use) a USB drive to run Wubi. If you want Wubi, just download wubi.exe and run it standalone, or save wubi.exe and the ubuntu ISO in the same folder and run wubi; no Ubuntu usb or cd is required or should be present.

Note, newer computers that have UEFI boot with a GPT disk don't work with Wubi either (and the symptom is similar to what you've described) so don't bother with Wubi unless you have a normal BIOS or hybrid boot with a MBR disk.

Can you help with this problem?
