wubi.exe and Ubuntu studio installation

Asked by jay halitzer

I have an Acer Aspire One mini laptop. It runs 32-bit Windows 7. I had Ubuntu 11.10 loaded that was installed via wubi.exe and it ran beautifully in a dual boot environment with my Windows 7. I uninstalled Ubuntu 11.10 and downloaded the Ubuntu studio x86 version 12.10 iso. My laptop doesn't have a cd-rom. I attempted to install it the same way as I did with Ubuntu 11.10. I use a windows program called Magic Iso, mounting the iso via virtual cd-rom. The wubi.exe included in the iso executed but ubuntu studio is not in the list to install. The list of installation options are Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mythbuntu, Edubuntu and Lubuntu.
I would appreciate it if anyone could help me with this matter. Thanks.

Wubi doesn't support ubuntu studio at this time. There are ways of getting Wubi to install unsupported ISOs (provided they have the right packages etc.). I've never tried it with ubuntu-studio, but you could try it... e.g. here's a way to install Xubuntu 12.10 (Xubuntu was removed from Wubi for 12.10): http://ubuntu-with-wubi.blogspot.ca/2012/10/tricking-wubi-installing-xubuntu.html

You'll need to find the package name for ubuntu-studio. It's probably:
ubuntustudio-desktop.

Hi bcbc,
Thx for the response. The link you gave me for Xubuntu ( http://ubuntu-with-
wubi.blogspot.ca/2012/10/tricking-wubi-installing-xubuntu.html ) did not
come come up in my browser as a good link. Is there another way I could
view that ?

Hi bcbc,
I'm looking at the link now. There was a space in the web link.

hi bcbc,
something is not correct with that tip. there is no installation.iso file
to delete and no preseed.cfg file to edit

Please provide a little more information as to what you did. I ran the steps exactly as written and made screen shots of the process. So you need to give some hints as to why it's not working for you.

For example, if you used installed Ubuntu (without the ISO) instead of Lubuntu then it won't work. It says that in the link:
"You don't strictly need to predownload the lubuntu ISO but it's faster than letting Wubi do it. If you decide to use the Ubuntu ISO instead of lubuntu you do have to download the ISO beforehand (because Ubuntu defaults to the preinstalled diskimage and that won't work with this technique)."

Or if you rebooted before trying to make the changes it won't work either.

I built a custom wubi.exe that installs ubuntustudio - however, ubuntustudio doesn't include the lupin-support package required to generate the grub boot entries for a Wubi install. So, you can get as far as installing it, but it won't boot automatically. The only way to boot it is to do it manually the first time (from the grub prompt) and then install lupin-support "sudo apt-get install lupin-support" and run "sudo update-grub".

I'm completing this now and will provide feedback.

Here's how to boot the first time:
When you see the grub menu hit 'c' to get to the grub prompt: grub>

Then enter:
search -s -f -n /ubuntu/disks/root.disk
probe --set=diskuuid -u $root
loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk
set root=(loop0)
linux /vmlinuz root=UUID=$diskuuid loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro quiet splash
initrd /initrd.img
boot

That will boot Ubuntu studio.
Then connect to the internet (if not already), go to a terminal - click top left, and then 4th from bottom:
Enter:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lupin-support

Then reboot.

PS as I said in my blog - I don't really recommend these manual workarounds unless you get a kick out of it. The smallest typo or letter with the wrong case can make this a real pain. But... it works. Ubuntu studio looks very slick.

My recommendation is to do it as a normal dual boot.

Merged code into Wubi:
https://code.launchpad.net/~smartboyhw/wubi/bug-1070682/+merge/134453
Ubuntu Studio will be coming in 13.04.

Can you help with this problem?
