Recovery mode is for fixing the OS. You don't have to use it. It has been available in all Ubuntu releases.

Is this a Wubi install ? Or regular dual boot ?

Either way , I suggest to back up your system now , to an external HDD.
Save your personal files - data periodically to and external HDD.

There are various backup methods in Ubuntu. Take a lookat here :
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem

If this is a Wubi installation you must know that is not a regular
install. Its a Virtual install. I strongly recommended to every user
Iknow , to test the Ubuntu OS with this Wubi install and when he/she
feels ready , to switch to a regular dual-boot.

Thanks
