wubi installation

Asked by Paulo Timoteo

Hello,

I am having problems installing ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop. I already have W7 ultimate x64 installed and i am a 1st time user of ubuntu. I use wubi to install ubuntu and everything seems fine until i reboot and choose ubuntu in boot menu.

It opened the desktop without a problem and a window appeared that say: Checking installation configuration

Then, other window opened that said: without root files system there is not set the files system of root files. Please correct this situation from partition menu.

It may not be by this terms exactly once i am portuguese and i have the portuguese version, so i am translating the best i can.

How can i solve this? i cant find any partition menu, and i thought that the installation aplication made the partition by itself to install ubuntu. I am afraid of touching something i shoulnt and lose precious data i have in computer.

I am sorry if this is a basic question but i am not a very advanced computer user, and after some search on your FAQ i didnt find anything similar to this.

Thanks in advance.

Timoteo

Did you MD5 test the file you downloaded?

I suggest you test the ISO and burn a CD or transfer the image to a USB device / SD card using unetbootin. Windows 7 can resize it's own partitions to make free space. You can then install Ubuntu to this free space. It will not be impacted by the fragmentation which is common in NTFS. It is also easier to troubleshoot.

Problem remains. If I remove w7 this will not be a problem anymore right? because i have other computer and i will make a backup of everything i have on laptop and install just ubuntu if it solves this issue in the easy way...

You don't need to remove Win7, just use add/remove programs in Windows and uninstall Wubi.

This problem (no root file system is defined) is due to:
1. partition table errors that Ubuntu doesn't tolerate (Windows isn't as fussy)
2. an unsupported fakeraid setup
3. a disk that previously had a gpt partition table that wasn't totally cleared when it was converted to a MBR partition table

Of those, 1. is the most likely.

To find out the issue, unfortunately you either need to repeat the process and when it fails, drop to a terminal Ctrl+Alt+F2 and enter the following commands (those are lower case -L's and note they are case sensitive):
sudo fdisk -l
sudo parted -l
sudo blkid

(the first command will specify a diagnostic if there is partition table problems, the second will just say there are errors if there are partition table problems, the third might provide info if there is a raid in play)

OR, boot from an Ubuntu CD/USB in live mode (select "Try it" without installing) and run the http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/

NOTE: you'll get this same problem whether you use wubi or do a normal install
