problem installing 11.04 on XP using wubi and livecd

Asked by Lisa Chumney

I want to install Ubuntu inside Windows to test it out first with some of my hardware and devices. I tried using the Wubi installer and that didn't work. When I rebooted it just went straight to windows.

I then tried burning a cd to boot from. That will get me to a ubuntu loading screen, but then there is an error and I have to reboot again.

Any ideas? I found somewhere on another site that there may be issues doing this with xp and there was a long, complicated method for installing. Is there no easy way to test ubuntu with XP?

I am running XP home edition, v2002, sp3
My computer has Intel Celeron M 1.5 ghz, 2g ram

Thanks for your help!

You have to specify the error, please.

Trying to install using Wubi does not give me an error, it just doesn't work.

When trying to run from a burned cd, I get this message:

(initramfs) mount.mouting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

Does the Wubi GUI show and allow you to select a target drive and size, and complete (the windows part) normally? Just that it reboots straight back into Windows?

If so then there are two possible problems: 1. the time to display operating systems is set to zero or 2. no entry for Ubuntu was added.

To fix 1. right click on My Computer, select Properties, Advanced, Startup & Recovery settings, and check that the time to display OS is 15.

If that isn't the prob post back more info.

Regarding the failure to run from a live CD, this is probably due to a bad burn. Hit any key when you see the keyboard icon (middle bottom) and then from the extended menu, select to Check the CD for defects.
