Can't load 10.10 or 11.04

I don't know much about computers at all. A friend recommended I use Ubuntu. I had ubuntu on my computer, using wubi for about a month. Then it started acting funny (freezing, wouldn't connect to the internet, etc.) so, I uninstalled it. Everything seemed to go fine.

Now, however, I can't reinstall it. I've tried 11.04 a couple of times, and 10.10 this last time. It installs forever, and then all of sudden, a window opens that says "An error occurred. Permission denied. For more information, please see the log file" I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but, when I start the installation, it also says something about "pyl" (or something like that?) being blocked by my firewall, but, I always allow it to go through the firewall. I've no idea. It didn't do that when I first installed it. Thanks in advance.

The error is that the bittorrent downloader is unable to connect. This is due either to your firewall (not allowing pyrun.exe access) or another firewall (corporate??, router ??).

In any case there are ways around this. You can download the desktop CD ISO yourself - for 11.04 you can use this http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
or http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.04

You want the 32bit version http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso
From the same place, get the wubi.exe i.e. for 11.04 it's http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.04/wubi.exe

Place the two in the same directory and run wubi from there. It will use the ISO you downloaded.

You can also create an Ubuntu CD or bootable USB using that ISO - instructions available here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

You can install wubi or regular ubuntu from the CD as well. You can use the USB to run Ubuntu in live mode or install regular Ubuntu (not wubi generally).

PS... you might want to investigate why your computer started running slow before.

1. Avoid hard shutdowns with Wubi. If it appears to be hanging refer to this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#How_to_reboot_cleanly_even_when_the_keyboard.2BAC8-mouse_are_frozen
2. Before installing run CHKDSK and defragment your windows drive
3. Check the size of the Wubi install (it's fixed) - you can keep track of how much space you have left with the command: df -h
Note that you can run out of space on the Wubi virtual disk even if you have plenty of space on the host 'drive'
4. Because the virtual disk is a single file (on ntfs: \ubuntu\disks\root.disk ) you should use caution when storing personal data on it. Make sure it backed up regularly - a good idea anyway - but important if you are using Wubi.
