Unable to load Ubuntu using GRUB

Asked by Jacob Chandy Varghese

I have been using Ubuntu for the last 2 months without a problem. 10.03 I guess (since it is not booting up, I am unable to remember the Ubuntu version). I had installed using WuBi. When I boot up my computer, I get options for both Windows (Windows 7) and Ubuntu. Normally I manually choose Ubuntu, and I reach a GRUB screen, where I can select the default option for Ubuntu loading, or it will automatically load in 10 secs. I had shut down properly on Friday. Today when I boot up, it is freezing at the GRUB screen. It is not allowing me to select the option to load Ubuntu, nor automatically loading. GNU GRUB version 1.98 -lubuntu9 is the option it should have selected.
I am stuck. I had installed Ubuntu using Wubi from my Windows, and hence do not have any Ubuntu CD. I am able to login to the computer using Windows, however, all my data and emails are in the Ubuntu partition. Hence I am totally stuck !

I checked once again.
GRUB version is GNU GRUB version 1.98 -lubuntu9. This is what is there on the top of the GRUB screen

The default login option it should have selected is Ubuntu Linux 2.6 - 32-28 -generic

Could you please urgently help with this?

Given the absence of any Ubuntu CD, the suggested solution should either prompt me to do something from my Windows OS (Windows 7) which works, or it should suggest something over the internet which I can access using my Windows OS and then use that to reload my Ubuntu without loss of data. Thanks for the urgent help. I am panicking more because I am running a non-profit and was completely dependent on Ubuntu, even flaunting it to many of my friends, but in about 30 mins when I have to rush for a very important meeting related to us getting funds, I am stuck. I will have to do without the presentation today, which is very unfortunate, but if someone can help me get restarted, I can send it to them after the meeting. Thanks for any help.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

No problem. I tried reinstalling Grub2, but that did not work either. Because of the urgency, and since I was able to backup critical files, I had to wipe the disk and reinstall Windows and Ubuntu. I was told by a friend who checked the computer that the issue may have been caused by a Windows Automatic Update (which was unfortunately enabled) which happened when I logged in to Windows. It seems because of the boot sector virus issue, Windows interferes with any other installation which touches the boot sector. I do not know if this explanation is valid, but I was told that since I had used WuBi installer, that would have made it susceptable to a Windows update mechanism. Anyway, now I have installed both Windows and Ubuntu from the disks in the 'side-by-side' option, in separate partitions.

Jacob Chandy Varghese,
I can confirm that this is not a Windows or a virus issue. It is a common, known problem with Grub2 and Wubi installs: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Warning

I am sorry that you had problems and it affected your work/data. Unfortunately Wubi support is limited within the Ubuntu community and unless your issue is passed through to the Wubi support team or you go to ubuntuforums.org where the community is used to supporting problems such as this - then it is difficult for users such as yourself to find the support they need to resolve this.

Thanks. I have now reinstalled without WuBi. Thanks for the update anyway.
