OS won't boot says no wubilder

Asked by gary White

I Installed the latest version of Unbutnu about a month ago using the wubi installer. It worked great. Today I installed updates, and rebooted the computer. when I get the choice to run unbutnu or vista I select Unbutnu. I get a message that says no wubilder and my computer restarts. I have some files I really need to recover, so I can't just reinstall. How can I boot Unbutnu?

There is a problem with a recent grub update that is preventing 10.04 installs from working. You are likely on 10.04(.1) if you installed from the ubuntu.com site.

So, simply to recover files you can use ext2read (http://ext2read.blogspot.com/) - just point it at c:\ubuntu\disks\root.disk. (It's read only access, but you can copy what you need).

Alternatively, it is possible to fix this problem, but you'll have to boot using an Ubuntu live CD, loop mount the root.disk and manually edit the grub.cfg file to get Ubuntu booting. Then after that you can make the fix permanent.

Have a read of this
