Wubi

Can't install 9.10 or 10.04 in XP Pro PC

Downloaded 10.04 from Ubuntu main site; burned cd per instructions.

Upon attempting to install via the cd (w/WUBI) I keep getting error msg "Exception processing message C0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c". Once the error appears, it won't go away no matter what I click (retry, cancel, etc.) - the drastic "power-off/pulled plug" reboot is the only thing that will work. Upon rebooting, as soon as I try to access the cd in the drive, the error msg reappears.

Subsequently tried the same installation with a (Canonical) 9.10 cd and got the same damned persistent error msg.

System: Intel D875P MB, Pent 4/3.2GHz, 3GB DDR400 RAM, 2/120GB 7200rpm Serial SATA HDs (RAID), CDRW, DVD-/+R/RW, XP Pro SP3... All hardware checks out (per Device Mgr), or at least so it appears.

Any advice/guidance would be appreciated. I'm not that technically astute, but not quite a Luddite... so please keep the responses simple enough for a novice to comprehend.

Hi, and thank you for posting this question. As far as the error message goes, I have only found one resource here for information. Not being a Windows user I can not confirm it's validity. (Please note: Off-site link)

As for Wubi, I should ask that you cleanly uninstall it using the process detailed here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Uninstallation

Then if you have a solid Internet connection try to use the standalone executable available for download here.
http://wubi-installer.org/

Please remove the CD from the drive while using the standalone installer. I am far from an expert but I hope my advice can point you in the right direction. I await your response.

Thanks Virgil... but it didn't work.
The WIKI answer did nothing - only a drastic power-off reboot cleared the exception error msg.
Removed cd from drive.
Removed Wubi (all I could find).
Internet connection is good, so I tried the stand alone installer (downloaded/saved file to desktop). Clicking to access results in the exception error msg reappearing (and won't leave - kinda like a drunken in-law...).
Re-boot required to clear...

Any more thoughts..?

This seems to me like a Windows issue, but any of the answers I search for here show different results and solutions.

I think you're right that it's a Windows issue... I'll spend some time trying some of these solutions and let you know.
I'm really coming to dislike Windows...

Success! It really is a Windows issue - and it's pervasive! It took me dozens of attempts to stumble upon the right procedure (at least for XP Pro). I feel like I've been a bumbling apprentice dabbling in cyber-alchemy...

First be absolutely certain all traces of WUBI and/or Ubuntu are purged from your drives. If you use the Search command be sure to search hidden files and folders (this may be critical - you must find and delete every trace. I couldn't get the fix that finally did the trick to work until I did so).

Run an AV scan (just to be sure) and then defrag the drive (helps to speed the process - something you should be doing routinely anyway).

Then follow this procedure... I think crossing one's fingers might help...

Here are the steps.

Click on Start > Run.

Type in as regedit and click on OK... You will get a popup window as Registry.

Click on + sign at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Click on + sign at SYSTEM.

Click on + sign at CurrentControlSet.

Click on + sign at Control.

Click on Windows there.

Look for the Error Mode key on the right side panel... 0X00000000(0)

Double click on Error Mode, and change the value data 2, then click on OK.

Now, you have to restart the PC.

Thereafter you will not get the windows NO DISK exception error when trying to install Ubuntu in any version.
