1) It's unclear if there are legal concerns
2) The protocol is changed frequently which breaks this client every time
3) I currently don't have a lot of time

I'm sorry if I open this question but I wanted to ask if you've ever considered the option of using openwhatsapp mitakuuluu or as a base for whotshere. mitakuuluu works very well (I use it every day on sailfish os) so I think that even with regard to the legal notice should not be a problem.

They are still banning users that use third party clients... so no reason to even try in this case.

If you don't change the the whatsapp base adding obscure features they will not find you as a third pard client.
Whatsup is the prove of it.
However can you provide whatsapp with a webapp built with https://web.whatsapp.com/ ?
