Password prompt for encrypted partition during init

I have an encrypted partition and in Dapper the init process stopped whenever /etc/init.d/cryptdisks was started, switched to vt1 and prompted me for the passphrase of the partition.

Now (in Edgy), that upstart handles this, it doesn't switch to vt1, and if I boot without "splash" and "quiet", I see why: The <Enter passphrase:> prompt appears, but it doesn't wait for input, but reads:
  Enter passphrase: Command failed: Key reading error.

Following bug #67799, I added "console owner" to /etc/event.d/rc[2S], which solves the problem above, I can now enter my password. But one problem remains: The password is shown in plain text on screen, and not hidden.
Did I use the wrong option for enabling this prompt (and which would be the correct one?), or is this a bug, which I should file?
And further, for other users with encrypted partitions: Is everybody supposed to edit /etc/event.d/rc[2S], or is that a bug which should be filed? Against which package?

cryptsetup is in the universe repository, so is therefore community supported. You should file a support request or bug on that package to improve its interaction with the "quiet boot" in edgy (which feisty will be continuing).

Variation on the original question:

What if I want or need biometric input -- fingerprint, eye scan, face recognition, etc -- as part of starting the workstation?

Consider:
     On {fingerprint approved}
     ... do stuff

     On {fingerprint rejected}
     ... do other stuff

      On {fingerprint ID="user1"}
     ... do stuff

     On {fingerprint ID <> menber_of_some_group }
     ... activate crippled workstation
     Else
     ... activate powerful workstation
