Disabling desktop effects in Ubuntu 11.10

Asked by Mikko Ohtamaa

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 over VNC. Dash is very slow, because of all bling bling and transparency stuff. Is there an option to turn this off?

You can disable Blur using ccsm (sudo apt-get install ccsm). But if Unity is slow for you, you can always use Unity 2D, a simpler version of Unity that runs better on slow computers:

https://launchpad.net/unity-2d

moo@morko:~$ sudo apt-get install unity-2d
[sudo] password for moo:

unity-2d is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
moo@morko:~$

What additional installation steps there are? I didn't find anything relevant in Appearance or Display settings (which where the first natural place one could look like this)

Unfortunately, the horrible blur effect has now made it to Unity2d. The devs seem to think it cool, and I couldn't find any way to disable it.

You should install MyUnity from the Ubuntu Software Center. It provide a wide range of features and customization options to tweak Unity. You can disable the blur, change the launcher size, panel transparency, and also get rid of chameleonic behavior and many more.
