Confusion on unity requirements

Asked by Aritchie

I wonder if you could clear up some confusion for me. I have this dell laptop that I am running Ubuntu 11.04 beta 1 and it will run compiz just fine under Ubuntu Classic but when I try to run Ubuntu it tells me that appears I don't have the necessary hardware to run unity and it defaults to Ubuntu Classic. I thought if the system could handle compiz it could run unity. I guess there must be something in the find print I missed. The laptop is a Dell Latitude D600 with an ATI Mobile Radeon 9000 chipset and it runs compiz and the various plugins just fine. I guess I will have to install Unity-2d.

Its due to the requirement of OpenGL as Far as I know. Unity needs at least OpenGL 1.4 support and the 9000 doesn't seems to support these.

Unity 2D is your only option, as your hardware is appearing to not support Unity 3d, like my ATI chipset.

If not, you have to stick with the gnome-panel.

If you can't get gnome, paste the following command into a terminal.

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Can you help with this problem?
