Will there be a Desktop?

Unity (compiz) has Desktop icons and all that. What about Unity-2d? Will I be able to have a Desktop like I do on "3d" Unity?

On a similar note, will it be possible to align desktop icons to the Right instead of left? With the launcher on the left as well as the default icon positions, it could be quite annoying and cluttered in terms of aesthetics.

There is no plan for that AFAIK, nor for Unity 3D.
