Will Oneric make UGR obsolete?

Asked by JC Hulce

Because Oneric (11.10) is being built using GNOME 3, there has been talk that it may make the UGR project obsolete. However, there are some things that the Oneric team has not done yet that we have. It is still the impression that Oneric will not include a fallback session option. We hope that the package that provides such an option (Made by the awesome GNOME 3 team) will make it into the distribution/ main archive. Also, we want the GNOME 3 shell available as a session option. There are other small things too, like the Cantarell font, which we will propose for Oneric main.

If Oneric does make UGR obsolete, wasn't this project a total waste?
Absolutely not. If all of the features we set out to ship are present in Oneric, then we have accomplished our project goals. This project has also taught me volumes about how Ubuntu works and can be modified, and I plan to document this so others can follow in our footsteps. This project has also created several packages that we plan to contribute to Ubuntu main/ universe for Oneric, such as Cantarell and Packtools.

In the current future, this will not affect the project at all. We'll still work towards our existing release dates and such. Also, we'll work with the Oneric team on the points described above, and give back to Ubuntu.

I don't think that we will be rendered obsolete, as we are becoming our own distro. We may, in the future move away from Ubuntu packages and become a pure Gnome 3 experience, without any major deviations from GNOME 3.

i think you will become obsolete because you can run unity and gnome-shell side by side i am running it right now in oneiric http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/04/gnome3-packages-begin-trickling-into-ubuntu-11-10/ when you install gnome3-session and gnome-shell it shows up on the login screean as Gnome it also installs the gnome-failback-session package as well

There will still be some use for our stuff. For example, we are working on the cantarell font, a complete collection of shell extensions, and an SDK for Ubuntu derivatives. Also, UGR packages will probably end up in Universe in Oneiric, but we are still working out the details.

I think the argument of having gnome-shell by default is enough for it to have a reason to exist. Example, I know many people who find linux mint appealing because all the fix-ins are installed by default, opposed to being restricted in Ubuntu. Convenience and ease can mean a lot sometimes.

Even if ugr is only a rebrand and repackage of Ubuntu, it's worth it for all those people who don't want to have to play with it or manually install packages to get that gnome-shell look/the classic gnome styled gnome 3 desktop.

Aka, the lazy and the busy ;) ahaha just kidding. Personally I was going to just install Oneric and modify it but if ugr exists in CD form in october, I would rather use that out of convenience.

BTW, you can find a community made iso here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1754198

And we are moving forward with having UGR in the Oneiric repos: we have to clean up some things first. Our 1.0 will come on August 1st, which is the deadline for submitting to the Oneiric universe. (well not exactly, but if we submit it any later it won't be reviewed in time)
