initrd and grub root drive assignment

Asked by Steve Romanow

what determines the drive assignments when initrd is made? I
moved a drive from hdc to hdd, and on every boot, it pauses to
check for hdc, and when intird is created for new kernels, it
always puts root=/dev/hdc1 in grub. I have changed fstab,
must be somewhere else

Take a look at /boot/grub/ and change the assignment for hd0 and hd1 if necessary.

An alternative approach is depending on the BIOS your computer uses. Some offer to boot from an arbitrary harddisk. If this is a possibility I recommend trying this first.
