zoneminder package

need help installing zoneminder 1.24.X

The camera I am using is not fully compatible with Zoneminder 1.23.3. I need to install 1.24, however there is not a package for synaptic. Being somewhat new to Linux, I am unfamiliar with the process of installing from source. Any help is appreciated.

To compile from source should ALWAYS be the very last solution.
Before that, you should check if someone didn't create a package to install the software. The packages for Ubuntu are often available from a "PPA", it's a software repository hosted on Launchpad.net.

I found two for zoneminder apparently :

https://edge.launchpad.net/~michael-gruz/+archive/zoneminder/+index?field.series_filter=
This one seems to be for Maverick

https://edge.launchpad.net/~manuel-aircable/+archive/zoneminder/+index?field.series_filter=
This one seems older.

So depending which version of Ubuntu you are using, you can try to install one of them. Probably a quite old one? May I ask why you dont use a more recent version of Ubuntu? You wouldn't have problem to install a recent version of this software then.

Thanks for the prompt response!
I am running Lucid, but I can install Maverick if there is a package for it. This will be a zoneminder dedicated machine so I will install any distro that gets me up and running!
I will update and give this a shot.

No problem installing 1.24.2 on Maverick with the PPA you listed. After some shared memory tweaking I am streaming full resolution and color. Thanks, this was exactly the kind of solution I was looking for!
