Upgrade to 0.7.0 possible for natty?

Asked by Grizzly

I just see that they have 0.7.0 released and list numorous fixed bugs. It would be nice to have it in "proposed upgrades", as 0.6.9 is now quite outdated ;-)

I recommend you submit a bug report / feature request, requesting that: either zfs-fuse be upgraded to 0.7.0 in Natty, or bug fixes from version 0.7.0 be backported to the version in Natty. "Proposed upgrades" (natty-proposed, in this case) contains packages being tested with the intention of being provided as security (natty-security) or stability (natty-updates) updates. New features, and fixes for bugs that do not create security vulnerabilities or serious stability/usability problems, are generally, by policy, not rolled out to stable Ubuntu releases, though they may be provided in Backports repositories (in this case, natty-backports). See http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/components, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates, and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for details.

I recommend you look at the details at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zfs-fuse, and compare them to the release notes for the new upstream version (0.7.0). If there are any security fixes in 0.7.0 that haven't been backported to downstream version 0.6.9-1, or any serious stability/usability bugs fixed in 0.7.0 that haven't been backported, then that should definitely be reported as a bug in zfs-fuse in Ubuntu. Lucid and Maverick are also (like Natty) supported, stable releases of Ubuntu, so they should get security and serious stability/usability fixes too.

By the way, the current development version (Oneiric) almost certainly ought to have zfs-fuse 0.7.0. It may be simply that the work of including it is going to happen, but has not yet happened. After all, Oneiric is very early in its development. Unlike for Natty, Maverick, and Lucid, in Oneiric, all the 0.7.0 functionality should be provided--Oneiric's feature freeze (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureFreeze) will not occur for a very long time. Arguably you should file a second bug for this rather than the same bug as for Natty, Maverick, and Lucid. But I'd probably mention it in the same bug report instead--you can always file a second report if instructed to do so by the Ubuntu developers, and the situation in Oneiric is less serious, because zfs-fuse would almost certainly be upgraded to 0.7.0 (or perhaps even a later version, if one comes out) in due time prior to Oneiric's feature freeze, even if you didn't file a bug.

Before filing your bug report / feature request, you should make sure to read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully if you have not done so already. Then you can initiate your bug report by running "ubuntu-bug zfs-fuse". Make sure your bug report is complete and self-contained (in particular, it should not be necessary for the Ubuntu developers to refer to this question in order to fully understand and appreciate your bug). If possible, you should provide details of the bugs that are fixed in the upstream 0.7.0 release, and explain why they are severe enough to warrant being backported to stable Ubuntu releases. (For any security bugs, you don't have to make an argument as to their severity--any security bug is considered worth fixing in Ubuntu, even in a stable release.)

After filing your bug report, you should use the "Link existing bug" link near the top of this question page to link your bug and this question to each other.

If you have any questions about the above advice, or problems following it, or if you want to attempt to install zfs-fuse 0.7.0 on your Natty system (by manually compiling it) and you need help with that, please post a reply in this question and I'll try to provide further assistance.

Can you help with this problem?
