login problems an older Ubuntu 5.10 release

I am currently using an older version 5.1 due to hardware limitations. I cannot login and move to the desktop; i am stuck at the dos prompt "myname@ubuntu:~$" Please help!

Had you tried issuing the terminal command startx while on the terminal?

Do you use ubuntu 5.10? Please install ubuntu version 8.04.3 or Karmic 9.10
Ubuntu 5.10 isn't updated anymore, because it reached ELO.
