Skype voice via logitech speaker rather than skype phone speaker

Asked by htebmac

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with the linux based Skype application. My problem is that when I speak into the Skype phone the sound of my voice is relayed into the external Logitech speakers. Also, the caller's voice is relayed through the external Logitech speaker rather than the phone's speaker. I need the caller's voice to go via the skype phone speaker.

I've tried changing the settings in Skype Options, but both the Speaker and Microphone are set as: PulseAudio server (local), and there isn't any other options available in the drop down menu.

Many thanks
John

As you have Ubuntu 9.10 all the sound-devices are managed by pulse-audio. To change the output-channels right-click on the speaker-icon on your panel and go to "Sound Preferences". There on the Output/Input tab you can select the output/input for each of your sound-sources/targets.

Additionally you can adjust the different output-volumes on the applications tab. This way you are able to listen to music on your speakers and having a phone call on your phone/headset at the same time with the same computer :-)..

If this doesn't resolves your problem with hearing your own voice in the speakers, try muting (m-key) your microphone input in alsamixer (in the console).

If you wish to have more control over these settings try installing paprefs and pavucontrol (enables you to even stream your sounds over the network :-) )

The ultimate 'solution' would be to install jack-audio where you are really able to wire every channel of your soundcard(s) to different applications and back, but it can be a little bit tricky to configure and more a music-studio solution than one for a skype user like you ;-).

Thank you for the advice.

This has partially solved the problem.

By going through: System/ Preferences/Sound and then selecting the Input tab, and then choosing - Input V-654 Composite Device Analogue Mono - and the same again on the Output tab enables skype to work via a skype-phone (ensuring the Mute is off). But unfortunately all music a video sound is then also routed through the skype-phone.

The only option is to change the settings back on the Input and Output tab to: Internal Audio Analog Stereo - but this renders skype only usable though the external speakers. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to have my cake and eat it.

Also, Skype isn't displayed on the Hardware or Applications tab, which probably explains why I can't configure Skype separately from the other audio devices.

Sorry, my mistake. I mixed something with pavucontrol and the SoundSettings.

The possibility to route each application to a different Soundcard/Output Device is only available in pavucontrol. Try installing this package. Then start pavucontrol and there you can select an output-card for every of your played back streams in the playback tab.
The skype Stream only appears when skype is using the soundcard, thats when you're in the middle of a call to someone (you can call the skype call testing service for setup).

sry for the confusion, hope this helps..

I am helping a friend to rescue his (virus ridden) PC from another OS by a clean install of 10.04 Lucid. We have downloaded Skype from the Canonical Partners Repository and seem to have a similar problem. That is: he wants the ringing thru the speakers, but the talking thru the handset. Is pavucontrol still the solution?

I didn't install pavucontrol, so sorry can't help beyond the partial solution of changing the settings in System/ Preferences/Sound......
