Installation hang at "Configuring apt" step. I had to click on skip to resume Ubuntu 9.10 installation.

Asked by Solidarity

Ubuntu 9.10 installation hanged at the "Configuring apt" step. I clicked on "Skip" to proceed with the installation. The operating system starts but now I need to carry out this step that I have skipped. Please help.

This is not the first time I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 but this is the first time i see this error.

Where you connected to a network that can reach the internet? I have experienced this, once I connected to a network with outbound ability it was able to update and install with no errors. Where you trying to install a package at time of original OS install?

I was connected and the only operation was the installation process. My question is how can I recover what I have lost by skipping the "Configuring apt" step (I think it was at the 80% mark of the installation).

Let me add that I was installing from a CD. What confuses me is that I have used this CD before and there was no problem but now I have this.

Does your /var/log/installer/syslog list any errors?

I am facing the same issue doing an install on a desktop P4 2.6 , 1 GB Memory , desktop connected to a DSL modem via an ethernet cable , updating it's repositories via the internet , just do an update once you get to the desktop , this is how you do it ---System-Administration-Update Manager , a message stating that that the system is up to date will be displayed (as you were connected to the server during installation , which was updating beyond your installation CD/DVD) , however still click on CHECK , a password prompt will come up enter the password and it will start updating .

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop it did not give this issue as I use WiFi to access the internet which requires an pass key to access the internet.

Depending on the number of files downloaded during the installation it will update the rest of the files.

Good Luck and do let us know if this worked for you , it did for me!!

Addition to the last post : I did a skip while it said configuring apt during installation (it was actually updating its repository which made it appear as if it was hung)

Thank you Madhav. I think that solved my problem. There were 200+ downloads when I clicked the 'check' button. I am not sure what they all were but one of them started a configuring GRUB screen. All is fine now I think. Thanks again and I hope this issue is given priority by the developers, in future installments, because it can put off a lot of Ubuntu-first timers.

I encountered a similar issue during my Ubuntu 9.10 installation where it hanged at the "Configuring apt" step. I had to click on "Skip" to continue the installation. However, now I need assistance in carrying out the skipped step. It's strange because I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 before without facing this error. Any help would be appreciated.
