install programs on a different drive

Asked by tombo

Hello, I have an 80 GB Raptor that has windows 7 on it and would like to have ubuntu on it also. Since the drive is so small I just want the O/S on that harddrive and all added programs to be stored on another drive (sdb). These are sata drives I don't know if it makes a difference. Could it be as simple as mounting sdb to /var ? If someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Thank You !

The applications installed by using apt-get/aptitude/synaptic/add-remove/software-center are stored in /usr and its child directories.

As you have mentioned you can put /usr on a separate partition, but realistically, it does not take up a *huge* amount of space

Personally, I find putting /home on a separate partition since my personal data takes up lot more space than the rest of the system.

It depends on how much space out of 80GB are you willing to give to ubuntu by taking it away from windows.

From installing lots and lots of applications on ubuntu 8.04 and ubuntu 9.10, neither of the two have taken more than 20 GB if I exclude /home .
For /home i have a separate 50 GB partition :)

Its entirely upto you, in terms of how you would like to setup the system.
Another option you could employ is two use a 25-30 GB partition having the entire / structure on it (including /usr /home ,etc) And take another partition separate from this just to store your personal data.
