cpu runs at 100%

Asked by Jeff.nitt

I downloaded the latest version of ubuntu to try an dto learn. It ran great at first then I started installing apps and it runs slow
When I look at the system monitor the CPU is at 100 and memory at 82% the two top processes are gnome-system-monitor at 44% and dbus-daemon at 40%. Can you help?

Can you tell us about your system, ie: memory hd etc?
When I check my system monitor the only process running is Gnome system monitor @ 12-16% everything else is sleeping. Are you connecting to the internet through a usb device?

Gnome-system monitor is very CPU intensive and on older CPU's isn't very practical to use. top or htop would be better to not overuse the CPU if you want to see what's happening.

I have an HP computer with an intel pentium 4 3.0 GHz processor and 1G of memory . I connect with a wireless pci card
The dbus-daemon seems to be the problem

Some of the articles I've read about this seem to indicate that Gnome VFS could be at issue here. Samba file shares could be the cause, not sure if this is your situation. Here are the links I checked out:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8486044
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7177640

and a bug report:

Hope this eludes to a solution for you.
