What do you mean it won't let you do it? Do you get any error messages?

I recommend doing a fresh install (personal opinion), but if you want to upgrade, you'll have to go from 8.10 to 9.04, And then from 9.04 to 9.10.

Do you have the option to upgrade to 9.04?

Of course not, the next_on_the_list would be 9.04

To upgrade to 9.04 the current version 8.10 must be fully updated.
Unless you have a corrupted sources.list it will offer distri upgrade to 9.04.
Check if in Synaptic option 'normal releases' is enabled.

Make sure to always reload packages list.

Honest, as Tiago above recommended, consider fresh installation of 9.10, because there were some major changes.

Backup only important data in your /home/user and move it later into your new installation.

Easy backup with .tar

There is nothing difficult with moving (copy) theme folders from/into the directory /home/user/.themes

## I did that myself with 8.04 (Hardy) and no issues with Karmic for one minute.
## Even if one theme doesn't work (outdated), so what, install another one.
## The desktop experience wont be the same as before anyway, it'll be much better.

e.g. best practice is a separate /home partition, when choosing manual partitioning on graphical installer, you just keep /home, instead of formating it, the rest can be formatted for / and swap.
