gammu 1.24.0 (karmic) does not work: Error opening device. Unknown, busy or no permissions.

The version of gammu available from Ubuntu Karmic, 1.24.0, does not work with my phone Nokia 3100. I get the following error:
Error opening device. Unknown, busy or no permissions.
This is not a permission error because:
- /dev/ttyACM* is owned by root:dialout and I'm a member of dialout
- running gammu with sudo doesn't work better.
