Hi! First, a few questions :)

Are you on a desktop or a laptop?
Have you been able to play music from CDs before?
Can you hear other sounds from your headphones/speakers besides CD Audio?

If it's a desktop, it could be that there's no audio connection going from the CD drive to the sound card. I'm not sure if I saw an option somewhere to use the IDE bus to stream music from the CD player. (I'd have to wait for someone else's opinion on that.)

The only other thing that I could think of is that the CD-In volume is turned down (Double-click on the volume icon on your panel, and make sure the volumes aren't at 0 or muted)

1. I'm on a desktop
2. I also have windows on my computer...and there everything is working fine!

I've checked the volume-control, and it's set on maximum level.

Thank's for helping out!

One last question, can you hear any other sounds in Ubuntu? For example, when you log in, there is a short musical clip.

This will help determine whether it is the CD sound settings or the sound settings in general.

No, there is no sound when I log in, so I guess there is a problem with the sound settings in general...
anyway, I've no idea how to fix this!?

i also have a laptop (acer Aspire 3500). I can hear sound, but very "light" and the soud is normal under .... another OS. My sound card is a Realtek AC97 (SIS7012). I don't know why i have this probem, but some friends of my have the same problem with a laptop.
If you have more information, my e-mail : <email address hidden> (Belgium)

What happens if you try to adjust the volume with alsamixer?
In a terminal run:
alsamixer
Try to move the CD and Master volumes and verify that you can hear anything.
Also plz also run the command (in a terminal as well)
ps -ef | grep esd
Then post the output.

Interesting, for every volume control hit the letter m (lowercase) if you are still unable to hear anything please provide me the output of the following commands:

sudo lspci
sudo dmesg
sudo lsmod
sudo cat /proc/asound/cards
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa reload

Also note that there is a bug report specifically for your card SIS7012, look at bug id #5844

Mmmmm, interesting, you have two sound cards, which one has the speakers plugged?
Which one you want to set as your default one?

You may switch between them in the Sound Preferences dialog, go to [Top panel]->System->Preferences->Sound
at the bottom of the dialog box you'll see see dropdown listing your two soundcards, please select the one which you want to use as default.

Yes!

Now it works! I can play cd's now!

But I still have a problem.

When I want to play a mp3-file, the audioplayer says:
not a soundtream.

??????
