uploading programme in arduino

hi i just managed to install arduino software,
  but while uploading programme to the freeduino serial board , i am getting an error as below:
avrdude: Yikes! Invalid device signature.
         Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
my chip is atmel8-16
and i have marked board no and serial port properly.
 pls help me in this issue
